WELCOMEOn behalf of all the members of the I.M.S.S. I'd like to welcome you to the web site of the International Macrobiotic Shiatsu Society. With the growing interest in using complementary and alternative methods to maintain or to regain health, people are educating themselves more and more. Whether it is to find out more about macrobiotics, or find information and practitioners of Shiatsu, we'd like to think that you have come to the right place! If you are looking for simple and effective techniques and information that everyone in the family can use, you have found it. The International Macrobiotic Shiatsu Society (I.M.S.S.) was founded by Shizuko Yamamoto and Patrick McCarty in 1986. Originally from Japan, Ms. Yamamoto has practiced and taught her comprehensive style of shiatsu for over 40 years. In the beginning, macrobiotic shiatsu practitioners were a loose-knit group devoted to promoting the combination of shiatsu with lifestyle information including the macrobiotic diet. Over the years, classes, seminars and workshops have been presented around the world. While there is no formal school nor curriculum for certification, there have developed a number of programs that are approved by Ms. Yamamoto and presented by her students. Sensei Yamamoto's teaching is the classic apprenticeship style. She helps students in their practice at the many international locations where she teaches. This form of teaching requires that students be self-motivated and independent, qualities she feels are essential both professionally as well as personally. Thus far students present Sensei Yamamoto's work in the United States, Canada, England, the Netherlands, Italy, France, Switzerland, Sweden, Belgium, Spain, Germany, Croatia, Hungary, and the Czech Republic. Exposure to Macrobiotic Shiatsu has spanned across society. Those familiar with Macrobiotic Shiatsu include the late Benjamin Spock, M.D., Dean Ornish, M.D., Neal Barnard, M.D., artist and composer John Cage and contemporary dancer Merce Cunningham, John Lennon, Doris Day, Olympia Dukakis, Mary Steenburgen and Ted Danson plus tens of thousands of friends and family. The "Healthways" newsletter keeps communication channels open with members, who receive it two - three times a year. To date there are 5 books and 1 video that explain and describe the Macrobiotic Shiatsu technique. |
